The drama is set in Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, which has been rapidly developing due to the coal industry since 1955, and modern Tokyo. It tells the story of love, friendship and family history spanning 70 years, and outlines the family ties and human conditions, youth and love in the post-war reconstruction period to the period of rapid economic growth, "an era with nothing but full of dreams and vitality". It also depicts the modern era "an era that seems to have everything but young people have no dreams", and searches for hope from the past to the present, unfolding a grand story that spans the times.
