The film is based on Ottessa Moshfegh's novel of the same name. The story takes place in a harsh winter in Massachusetts in 1964. Young Irene works as a secretary in prison. When charming counselor Rebecca becomes her new colleague, she can't help but be deeply attracted to her. After Rebecca reveals a dark secret, their relationship changes, pushing Irene onto a path of crime.
