The series is set against the social history of the Qing Dynasty. It mainly tells the story of Wei Xiaobao, a ruffian boy from the market who breaks into the martial arts world and the palace by chance, and from then on relies on his extraordinary wisdom to maneuver between the martial arts sects and the court officialdom, and climbs up all the way. It is a reverse legendary story.
