The film is based on a short story of the same name by Joe Hill: In 1978, in a small suburban town in Colorado, a teenager named Finney Shaw was kidnapped by a killer nicknamed "The Kidnapper," who had kidnapped and killed five children before. Finney later found an antique phone in the basement where he was imprisoned. Although the phone line was broken, he always received calls from past victims trying to help him at night; Finney's sister Gwen also dreamed of a related vision at this time, guiding her to find Finney. The supernatural events that happened to the brother and sister began to become the key to saving Finney.
