Based on Sarah Perry's novel of the same name, the series follows recently widowed Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves from London to Essex to investigate rumors of a mysterious snake. Cora develops an unexpected bond with the village vicar, Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, the locals accuse her of attracting the creature.
